On New Holland Island in Saint Petersburg, museums shared in the presentation of Firebird Descent, a massive art installation that retells the Russian legend of the Firebird, adding to that legend much as Igor Stravinsky did with his Firebird suite. Perhaps this is an appropriate location for such art. The Russian Empire created Saint Petersburg out of nothing, envisioning a cultural titan of Europe on par with London, Paris, Florence, and Berlin as it erected breathtaking architecture and fostered robust visual and performing arts. Saint Petersburg itself may be the world’s largest fine art installation.

Closer to home, the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, California recently presented Sunset Trace, an outdoor Skynet installation that brought an undulating stream of vibrant color to the palm-lined cliffs of the Laguna shore. This creative museum artwork goes beyond the walls of the museum, beckoning art enthusiasts to enjoy the artwork’s interplay with the sky and sea.
