SCHOOL OF BREEZE

by: Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics

On September 18, 2018, the latest Skynet artwork by Patrick Shearn and his Poetic Kinetics team debuted in Portugal. “School of Breeze” is the artist’s first installation on the Iberian Peninusula. Spanning 171 meters in length and suspended from 3.5 meters to 15 meters high, the Skynet is also the largest of the artist’s series of kinetic sculptures to be exhibited in Europe.

Inspired by Portugal’s connection to the sea, Shearn developed the site specific work for Freeport Lisboa Fashion Outlet where the artwork provides an unprecedented experience of originality and contemporary art innovation to visitors.

Patrick Shearn is world renowned for his striking, larger-than-life, moving sculptures, called Skynets. “School of Breeze” is the latest kinetic art installation of this series, designed to evoke the movements of nature, such as the fish shoals of the Atlantic Ocean.

Says Nuno Oliveira, Business Director Portugal of Via Outlets, “After the presentation of the new center at the end of last year, it is a privilege to receive this work of art that will cement the positioning of the center as an exclusive shopping, leisure and cultural destination. We are certain that this installation of Patrick Shearn will not leave any visitor indifferent.”

“School of Breeze” is comprised of approximately 3100 linear meters of rope and approximately 50,000 holographic Mylar streamers, which refract a stunning full spectrum of color. Harnessing available wind, the artwork transforms into  a unique ballet of kaleidoscopic reflections, offering a unique sensory experience to those who visit the center.

Inspired by Portugal’s connection to the sea, this site specific artwork provides a one-of-a-kind immersive experience.
