SUN CYCLE

A KINETIC ART SCULPTURE

by: Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics

“Sun Cycle,” the latest Skynet artwork by Patrick Shearn and his Poetic Kinetics team.  This kinetic sculpture opened to the public in Beijing in April 2019.  The artwork spanned approximately 1700 square meters.  It rose and fell in a constant dance from 6 meters off the ground to 18 meters high.

Inspired by the perpetual grace of the recurring rhythms of nature, Shearn developed this site-specific artwork for WF Central.  Sun Cycle provides an unprecedented experience of originality and contemporary art innovation.

Patrick Shearn is world-renowned for his striking, larger-than-life, kinetic sculptures, known as the Skynet Series. “Sun Cycle” is the first kinetic art installation of this series to be displayed in China. For this work, the artist designed a surface that illustrates a sun simultaneously rising and setting.

The artwork is comprised of approximately 1410 linear meters of rope, over 150 hand-tied technical knots, and approximately 33,200 ripstop nylon streamers.  Anchored inconspicuously at a distance, the artwork sways and undulates as if floating in midair.  Those who encounter the artwork in person express a peaceful, immersive experience.

Although this is the first Skynet Series installation, it is not Poetic Kinetics’ art exhibit in China.  Warrior and the Girl was Poetic Kinetics’ first art exhibit in Beijing and the first project for the art studio.
