This summer, a captivating art installation in Green Mountain Falls is suspended over Gazebo Lake. It looks like luminous brushstrokes dancing across the sky. Titled Off the Beaten Path, the piece invites you to slow down, look up, and watch a choreography of wind, color, and light. Created by multidisciplinary artist Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics, this 6,000 square foot aerial sculpture is the newest in his celebrated Skynet Series. In fact, it’s the first to debut in the heart of Colorado’s Pikes Peak region.

A Sculpture That Breathes with Nature
This sculpture is a living instrument, finely tuned to the environment around it. To achieve this, it was created with ultra-lightweight kite fabric and more than 6,000 feet of rope. Each morning at sunrise, 35,700 vibrant ribbons catch the first light. These ribbons ripple like liquid brushstrokes in the breeze, sending the canopy rolling in slow, silken waves. Later, as twilight arrives, the artwork appears to waltz with its own reflection on the darkening lake.
Because each breath of wind writes a fresh stanza, every glance reveals a new version of the work. This ensures that every visit offers a unique experience you haven’t seen before.
A Word From the Artist
“With Off the Beaten Path I wanted to deepen the sense of wonder already present here—without overpowering it,” explains artist Patrick Shearn. “Consequently, the piece listens to the site, revealing what’s in the air and in the moment.”
